So one of your best friends has asked you to be a bridesmaid! She wants you to stand by her side during her big day! Of course you are so excited, but a little worried about the cost too. So, how much does it actually cost to be a bridesmaid?
In our blog post, The Average Cost of a Nashville Wedding, we talked about how the average cost of a wedding in Nashville is around $25,000 but that this number can vary drastically. The same goes for being a bridesmaid! The price can depend drastically on what kind of wedding your bride is having.
In a recent WeddingWire study, the cost of being a bridesmaid average out to be around $1200 per person!
So, why is that so expensive? Let’s break down the cost:
The Bridesmaid Dress $200-$300
This is probably the most commonly known bridesmaid expense.
Between a dress and alternations, if needed, you can be looking at spending around $200 – $300 (WeddingWire).
This definitely depends on what type of bridesmaid dress your bride has in mind. We’ve seen lots of our bridal parties use the website Azazie when picking bridesmaid dresses and the cost per dress can be as low as $79!
Hair, Makeup, and Nails: $130-$170
Hair and Makeup is another expense that a bridesmaid normally has, but this is something you can definitely save and do on your own. The average cost of hair and makeup for a bridesmaid is around $130 (WeddingWire). This average does not include nails, which many bridal parties will have done before a wedding. A manicure and costs anywhere from $20- $50, depending on what you get.
The hair, makeup, and nails can also sometimes be gifted by the bride (especially if she is requiring you to get these services done professionally).
We can’t forget accessories! This is another item that will sometimes be gifted by the bride, but the bridesmaids will need shoes and other items such as necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and so on. A way you can save on this is wearing shoes / jewery that you already have. According to WeddingWire, bridesmaids spend about $120 on accessories.
Travel & Accommodations: $320
Travel is an expense that can vary greatly as a bridesmaid. Are you an out-of-town friend that is having to fly in for the wedding? Or do you live where the wedding is taking place? Even so, you may need to find a hotel or Airbnb for the weekend. These prices can drastically vary depending on your situation.
Here at Cherokee Dock, we often have wedding weekends. Our mansion and apartment can sleep up to 40 guests, so normally the bridal party stays on site.
If you are having a day of wedding in Nashville, the average cost of a hotel room (which according to WSVM, Nashville’s Hotel prices are the most expensive in the entire country) is $223 per night.
WeddingWire says that “Bridesmaids spend an average of $115 on travel to and from a wedding, and $205 on accommodations.”
Bachelorette Party: $1,350
We can’t forget the all-important bach bash! Normally all the bridesmaids will chip in and treat the bride for their bachelorette party. The average cost of a bachelorette party in Nashville, TN is $1,350 according to Stylecaster. In this estimate, they included travel, airfare, lodging, food, cocktails, beers, and popular tourist attractions.
A bachelorette party can really be as big or as small as you want it to be, so this is something you as a bridesmaid have more control over the cost of.
Other Parties – Varies
In addition to the bach party, there are other celebrations you or another bridesmaid may host such as a Bridal shower or an Engagement party. These costs are the responsibility of the host.
Wedding Gift: $125
Even after all of these expenses, a bridesmaid will still usually purchase a wedding gift for the couple. Wedding gifts range in cost, but according to WeddingWire, the average amount a bridesmaid will spend on a gift is $125 (WeddingWire).
How Much Did a Real Bridesmaid Spend?
We asked Kenzie Carlson, who was a real bridesmaid here at the Estate at Cherokee Dock how much her bridesmaid duties cost her. Here was the breakdown:
- $150 – Bachelorette Party
- $120 Bridesmaid Dress
- $30 – Shoes
- $40 – Nails
- $100 – Hair
- $60 – Gas for wedding & bach party
Kenzie’s expenses were a lot less than the national average, which goes to so how much the cost can vary!
So how much does it being a bridesmaid cost?
In this article, we learned that the cost of being a bridesmaid really does vary. There are definitely things you can save on such as hair and makeup, accessories, or even just buying a less expensive wedding gift.
However, if being a bridesmaid just isn’t feasible, that’s okay! Let your bride know. She may help you out with expenses, or you can choose to participate in her wedding by filling a different role.
